Acid Eaters: I was looking forward to hearing it....

Acid Eaters... ...what would be their penultimate album. The Ramones, covering mostly garage punk, mostly Nuggets era stuff, with some bigger name bands' cuts thrown in. A few tunes were from before the psychedelic era, but it was all the type of stuff that they covered well. They usually put at least one cover on each album, and they were always tight and spirited, as good as or better than the original. It was disappointing. The songs sounded rushed, uninspired. I started the Acid Eaters playlist by assembling the tunes they had covered on their other albums. After that, I added covers by the Jam and the Clash and carried on from there. To be included, a song had to be a cover by a punk, new wave or - at least at some point - “underground” band. It had to be a cut from a proper album or maybe the b-side of a single. No tunes from tribute albums or projects like the original album , the Band's Moondog Matinee , half of Rundgren's Faithful , or albums like  Throu

Early Power Pop

Power Pop. A throwback to simpler music. Short, upbeat songs with bright harmonies. Descriptions usually invoke the Who (pre- Tommy ), the Kinks (pre- Face to Face ), or the Beatles (pre- Rubber Soul ). They often feature punchy or arpeggiated chords, which may be clean and compressed or treated with crunchy distortion. In its heyday, the prime movers were Cheap Trick or the Knack, but who influenced them? We all know those four Badfinger Songs. We know about Big Star and at least know one song, even if it's a cover by This Mortal Coil , the Bangles , or a cover version as the theme song to a sitcom. Most of us can name at least one - and maybe as many as three - Raspberrie s songs, but what else was there? Quite a bit, it would seem:   Early Power Pop .

1977 or So: the Early Punk Singles

Here's a long playlist: 1977 or So . It attempts to track the punk sound through singles arranged, more or less, in the order that they were released. When I could only find the month of issue, I placed it in the middle of the month. If I could only find the year of release, I stuck it between June and July. Imagine you had a friend at a cool record store with access. And no, I do not have a lot of time on my hands. I made this playlist years ago.  On Instagram @dadrock101 On Twitter @dadrock101

Nuggets and Little Tiny Rocks: the Psychedelic Singles

Nuggets and Little Tiny Rocks: the Psychedelic Singles: 1965-67 . I tried to put the songs in order of release. Again, if I only had a month for a release date, I put it in the middle of that month's releases. If I only had the year, I stuck it between June and July. What was that wave of performers listening to on AM radio during this time? Maybe it sounded like this. Follow on  Twitter Follow on  Instagram
